The CALA Distinguished Service Award is presented annually to a CALA member who has demonstrated leadership and service and made a commitment and extraordinary contributions to the advancement of Chinese-American librarianship. This year the Award Committee is pleased to announce that Prof. John T. Ma is the recipient for the 2009 CALA Distinguished Service Award.
Prof. Ma was nominated jointly by Dr. Hwa-Wei Lee, Dr. Tze-chung Li and Dr. Ching-chih Chen for his great success with his initiative "Book-for-China Fund", a project he launched since 2005.
Prof. Ma received a M.A. in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin in 1948 and a MLS from Columbia University in 1958. His professional career spanning over 50 years includes positions as Associate Librarian of the Missionary Research Library at Columbia University, Chinese Bibliographer-Cataloger at Cornell University Libraries, Curator-Librarian of the East Asian Collection of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, Director of the Library at the Sinological Institute of the University of Leiden in the Netherlands and Chinese Librarian at the New York Public Library. While at Stanford, Prof. Ma also served as a professor of Asian Studies at Lincoln University in San Francisco and taught at the San Francisco State University. He has been invited as a visiting professor at National Taiwan University, Tamkang University in Taiwan, East China Normal University (Shanghai), Changchun University of Science and Technology (Jilin), and the Southeast University (Nanjing) in China.
Prof. Ma devoted all of his time and effort to ensure the success of the "Book-for-China Fund" project despite various types of the problems and difficulties that arose. He tirelessly explored many avenues for the needed books or journals for academic libraries in China. Against all odds, he managed all the logistics to deliver the books to China with limited funds. It involved collections, storage, sorting, shipping, administrative negotiations with end parties and authorities on protocols. This project resulted in over 100,000 books shipped to China in less than 4 years which is considered an unparallel success by any measurement.
The Committee believes that Prof. Ma has consistently demonstrated outstanding leadership and achievements in library and information services at the national and international level. We share the sentiments expressed so genuinely and strongly by his nominators and supporters. Prof. Ma is a model of how an individual can accomplish a noble cause with his vision, determination and hard work.

《中国社会科学》2008年全年6期，所发表论文大体可以分为10个学科类别，其中可归属“中国特色社会主义理论研究”的论文有10篇，哲学20篇，经济学15篇，法学14篇，文学13篇，历史学11篇，社会学6篇，政治学4篇，传播学1篇，人类学1篇，共计发文95篇。
95篇文章的作者来自44个学术机构，其中发文最多的机构是刊物的主办单位—中国社会科学院，发文14篇。除中共中央党校、广东省委党校、中共中央编译局、中央文献研究室、国务院研究室、上海社会科学院外，余下的发文机构均来自高等学校，共有37个单位。
来自大学机构的发文数量统计如下：北京大学、复旦大学、清华大学分别发文7篇；中国人民大学6.5篇；北京师范大学4篇；吉林大学、南开大学、武汉大学分别发文3篇；黑龙江大学、华南师范大学、南京大学、首都师范大学、香港中文大学各为2篇；华中师范大学1.7篇；浙江大学1.5篇；东北财经大学、对外经济贸易大学、广州大学、河南大学、湖南大学、华东师范大学、华东政法大学、暨南大学、辽宁大学、山东大学、山东师范大学、山西财经大学、山西大学、上海大学、沈阳师范大学、苏州科技大学、浙江师范大学、中国农业大学、中山大学各1篇；上海交通大学、中国政法大学各0.5篇；中南财经政法大学0.3篇。
全年在该刊物上发文两篇的作者有2人，分别是来自吉林大学哲学基础理论研究中心的孙正聿和香港中文大学政治与公共行政系的王绍光。王绍光兼任清华大学公共管理学院长江讲座教授，如果把他的论文归到清华名下，则清华大学2008年度在《中国社会科学》上的发文篇数超过其他，为最多的高校。
另一有趣的情形是，发文各位3篇的学校学科还都集中在特定的学科，吉大、武大两家的3篇大抵都是哲学类的，而来自南开的3篇则都是关于文学的。
